What is Dock Leveller Pit Construction?

Dock leveller pit construction is the process of building or repairing the pit that surrounds a dock leveller. A dock leveller is a hydraulic platform used to bridge the gap between a loading dock and a truck bed or warehouse floor.

Why is Dock Leveller Pit Construction required?

The goal of dock leveller pit construction is to create a secure and stable foundation for the leveller, ensuring a smooth and safe loading and unloading operation. Whether this be at a commercial facility or an industrial space, it is vital to ensure safety within the workplace.

Proper dock leveller pit construction is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the loading dock area, preventing accidents and damage during its use, and providing long-term protection for your facility.

What is the process of Dock Leveller Pit Construction?

The construction of a dock leveller pit involves a number of important steps. It begins with the excavation of the pit, after which support structures need to be installed to ensure the integrity of the pit itself. Concrete is then poured into the pit before it is finished. Let’s take a look at the necessary steps in more detail.

  • Health and safety are paramount in any project, so the construction team will start by setting up a safe working environment, for all involved
  • Construction commences using a petrol floor saw to cut back the concrete, breaking away any damaged areas. The area will be dampened to reduce the release of dust during this process, which is important for the health and safety of those in the facility
  • Timber shuttering is installed to support the newly created pit and to help with the formation of the new concrete walls. The walls are further reinforced with the installation of kerb angles
  • After the shuttering is formed and the kerb angles are in place, the pouring of concrete can begin. A 110v vibrator is used for this process to ensure that there is no honeycomb on the surface. This will leave a smooth finish on the concrete once the shutters have been removed
  • The timber shutters are now ready to be removed, leaving the exposed pit
  • Cleaning is vital after the completion of the work, including the removal of equipment in a safe and secure manner.
